Proudly serving the sport of darts since 1966

PROFILE

SERVICE TO THE SPORT OF DARTS

  • The Club was founded in 1966 out-of the Malvern Cricket Club (ex District Six – now defunct).
  • The Club was a member of the Athlone Darts Union until 1972.  It is presently affiliated to South Peninsula Recreational Association (SPRA). SPRA is a member to Western Province Darts Board of Control and Darts South Africa.
  • The Club has achieved many playing successes over the years including SPRA Men and Women League champions for many years.
  • Many of its members have represented SPRA in the Western Province Inter-District Championships and have represented SPRA and Western Province at National level.
  • Its members have served in administrative capacities viz.
  • Mervyn Johnson – Chairman of SPRA (district association) for 17 successive years and presently the Business Manager/PRO of Darts South Africa.
  • Bernard Ryklieff – presently Vice-Chairman of SPRA.
  • Tony Thompson is presently the SPRA Match Secretary.
  • The Club has organized an annual off-season competition – Malvern Sunshine Fours – for the last 30 years.  This competition has gained many new recruits for the organized league structures.
  • The Club has visited Kleinzee, Kimberley, George, Knysna, Mossel Bay and various towns in the Boland to assist in the promotion and growth of darts in these areas.
  • We are keen to add a youth section to our activities.  We have had successful projects with Fairmont High School.

MEMBERSHIP AND PLAYING VENUE

  • The present membership of the Club consists of 48 active men and women players.
  • Our two senior teams play the matches in a central venue, SPRA Centre. All our other teams (6) play their matches on a Thursday and Saturday at a private home I Helena Road. Lotus River.
  • Our parent body’s league structure requires that clubs provide a home venue and the practice has been to use private homes. Growth in the sport has witnessed some clubs moving into non-residential venues and Malvern has been on the look-out for a suitable similar opportunity.

40th ANNIVERSARY

  • The Club celebrates its 40th anniversary next years and it has planned a few key social and competition events to celebrate this milestone.
  • The Club is also planning to focus on Youth development and to combine with community structures in the wider development of darts and to link it with awareness issues viz. Drugs in Sport, HIV/Aids. Women and Child abuse.
  • We have applied to Lotto for financial assistance for these celebration projects.
  • Development projects will be organized under the Darts SA “Operation Bullseye” Development Programme.  These projects are “Adopt A School” and “Lets Play Darts”. Darts SA can also assist in the training of administrators and technical officials.
